Mulayam Singh Yadav, former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, and founder of the Samajwadi Party, was born on 21 November 1939 to the family of Murti Devi and Sughar Singh Yadav in Saifai village, Etawah district of Uttar Pradesh. He graduated (B.A) from Etawah-based Karm Kshetra Post Graduate College, did his B.T at A. K. College in Shikohabad, and obtained his master’s degree (M.A) from B. R. College, Agra University. He did his graduation, post-graduation and then master’s degree in political science. Mulayam Singh Yadav, Member of Parliament, Lok Sabha has a son named Akhilesh Yadav, the former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, from his first, late, wife, Malti Devi, and another son by the name of Prateek from his second wife, Sadhana Gupta. The political career of Mulayam Singh had its maiden journey when he first was elected as an MLA in the lower house or Legislative Assembly of Uttar Pradesh, in the year 1967, for eight terms. He was first elected as a state minister, later as the president of UP’s Lok Dal party, and thereafter he was the elected leader of the opposition in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council and continued to hold that post until 1985. He brought Krantikari Morcha party to the fore subsequent to the split from Lok Dal party and later joined Janata Dal (Socialist) party led by Chandra Shekhar and served as the chief minister of UP on the support of Indian National Congress. However certain political dichotomy between his party and Chandra Shekhar’s government in Centre caused the downfall of his government prompting a mid-term election in 1991 in the state, resulting in the loss of Mulayam’s party to the BJP. Post establishing his Samajwadi Party (Socialist Party) in 1992, Mulayam sought an alliance from the Bahujan Samaj Party, a political development that thwarted the return of BJP to power in UP. Mulayam Singh became the chief minister of UP for a second term by drawing supports from Congress Party and Janata Dal. He also drew flaks over his controversial statement on the movement which was staged to demand for separate statehood for Uttarakhand. Mulayam became the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh for the third term in 2003. He is also known for his stand on backing up the Dalai Lama and Tibetan independence, endorsing China as a real enemy to India than Pakistan.
