Brief Story Of Satyanarayana Vrat

There are mostly seven chapters included in the tale of lord Satyanarayan Vrat. However, those seven chapters are now condensed into five chapters, considering shortage of time due to hectic schedules in life of the mankind. Tales of each chapter is being briefed here in the following manner. First chapter – Once Sankadi and eighty-eight thousand sages in Naimisharanya pilgrimage asked Shri Sutji about attainment of God’s devotions and salvation of the mankind who are deprived of Vedas and educations. They requested him to tell them about a meditation that could fulfill their desired wishes in short times. They expressed their eagerness to listen to that story. After hearing the requests of sages, Sutji told them methods regarding puja. Second chapter – Sutji tells the story to the sages about a person who observed the vrat. He says, a very poor Brahman once lived in beautiful town called Kashipura. He roamed around here and there thirsty and hungry. Driven to compassion at the plight of the poor Brahman, the kind lord took the form of an old Brahman and appeared in front of the poor Brahman. The lord asked Brahman to account for his wandering here and there aimlessly. Third chapter – Sutji said – “O great sages! Now listen another tale”. Once a wise king by the name of Ulkamukh was very truthful and celibate. Every day, he visited a shrine and donated wealth to the poor to end their sufferings. His wife was extremely beautiful and devoted to her husband. The couple observed Satyanarayana vrat at the bank of Bhadrashila river. Fourth chapter – Sutji said, the Vaishya set off his journey and headed to the town. After covering some distance, lord Satyanarayana disguised as a pedestrian, asked – “O merchant! What’s there in your boat?” The merchant, out of sheer vanity, said, “O pedestrian! Why do you ask? Do you want to take my wealth? My boat has nothing but roots and leaves.” Fifth chapter – Sutji said, “O monks! Let me tell you another story. Please listen. A king named Tungdhwaj was kind to his subjects. He also sustained a great deal of pains when he rejected God’s prasad. Once he hunted down an animal in a forest and came under a banyan tree for a rest. He saw some folks of milkmaids observing Satyanarayana puja. The king did not attend the puja, neither he greeted because of his arrogance. When the milkmaids offered him prasad, he rejected it and set for his kingdom. There he found everything ravaged in ruins. He knew it was God’s deed. Thus, listen to the whole story, conduct Arti of lord Satyanarayana, chanting, जय लक्ष्मी रमणा श्री जय लक्ष्मी रमणा, सत्यनारायण स्वामी जन पातक हरणा After Arti, hail to the lord, distribute prasad and conclude your vrat-puja.
