Early childhood

Delhi-born Virat did his preliminary education at a famous school, Vishal Bharti Public School, in Delhi. After the West Delhi Cricket Academy came into being in 1998, Virat aged just 9-years then was a part of its first intake. He was trained at the academy in which his dedication to the sports earned him accolades by his teachers who called him “a bright and alert kid”.

Domestic career as a cricketer

The initial cricketing phase of Virat started when he played for Delhi Under-15 team in October 2002 in the 2002–03 Polly Umrigar Trophy, and captained the team to which he showcased brilliant performance confirming his slot for Delhi Under-17 team for the Vijay Merchant Trophy (2003–04). He played for the India Under-19 squad in 2006 and delivered a strong technical skill against both pace and spin. Later Kohli debuted his Twenty20 and amassed highest runs for his team in the Inter-State T20 Championship. He also captained the 2008 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup that was organized by Malaysia and led his team to victory. He made his place to India’s 30-man probable squad for the ICC Champions Trophy in 2008 to be held in Pakistan.

International cricket career

Kohli made to the Indian ODI squad for tour of Sri Lanka and the Champions Trophy in Pakistan in august 2008. He played as a makeshift opener during Sri Lankan tour for the whole series. He was 19 years old when he made international debut as a cricketer in the first ODI of the same tour. After a couple of opportunities in which he proved his sportsmanship, Kohli came to fame as a leading run-scorer in the five-match ODI series of the South African tour in January 2011. This led to his cricket-ranking jumped on to number two spot on the ICC Rankings for ODI batsmen. He was the part of victorious Indian team in the ICC Champions Trophy in England in 2013. He was the vice-captain for 2014 ICC World Twenty20. He also led Test captaincy for India for the first test of the Australian tour in 2014 in place of MS Dhoni when the later got injured. The ton Kohi scored for the second innings in the Test series won him ovations by many Australian commentators. In the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy, Kohli captained the Indian team and led it to the finals but lost to Pakistan by 180 runs. He is the player to have scored 10k runs in ODIs before the age of 30. He also captained the India’s squad for the 2019 Cricket World Cup.

As a player, Kohli is known for his aggressiveness with strong technical skill. Though he is a middle-order batsman but is not limited to that format only as he also opened the innings on various occasions. He was called as a consummate surgeon at the crease by AB D Villiers.
